On March 31, 1991, Whitney performed her first ever solo televised concert Welcome Home Heroes, which was broadcast live from The Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia. The show was held for 3,500 service men and women returning from the Gulf War, which was known as Desert Storm at the time. Because there were “more troops than seats,” many soldiers were invited to the dress rehearsal. The night of the broadcast, HBO agreed to unscramble their signal allowing the show to be available to over 50 million cable households!! The show won a Cable ACE Award for “Performance in a Music Special or Series.” The special was directed by British director David Mallet who had worked with David Bowie and Queen, amongst others. Here’s a fun clip of Whitney performing “Who Do You Love” from that special night.
