In May 2003, Whitney made a guest appearance on the then hit TV show Boston Public, playing herself and singing “Try It On My Own” from her Just Whitney album. In the episode, she grants the wish of a teenage boy who would like her to be his date to the prom. The series starred Whitney’s friend Loretta Devine, whom she had worked with on Waiting To Exhale.

Thirty one years ago this week, Whitney’s “Greatest Love Of All” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was her third consecutive No. 1 and spent three weeks at the top. The song was written by Michael Masser and had originally been recorded by George Benson in the 70s. It remains her third biggest hit after “I Will Always Love You” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The B-side of the single was the song “Thinking About You.”

Seventeen years ago today (May 16, 2000), Whitney: The Greatest Hits compilation album was released. This photo was one that was considered for cover at the time, but not chosen. The album garnered four singles, including “Could I Have This Kiss Forever” with Enrique Iglesias, “If I Told You That” with George Michael, “Fine” and “Same Script, Different Cast.”

Cissy and Whitney singing together back in the early 80s. Whitney got her start with her Mom, singing in church and later in Cissy’s nightclub act. Thinking of Cissy on Mother’s Day, which is this Sunday in the United States.
